At the heart of my practice is a belief that gathering is never just about bringing people into a room. It is about creating the conditions for people to feel welcomed, respected, heard and connected.

Celebrating love 💛✨ What a beautiful day to get married 🥂

Check your susu’s! 👀

The past month I’ve been offline because our family-Matriarch, my Mum @ranujames received a breast cancer diagnosis after a routine mammogram. It’s been an overwhelming and scary time for her and our family as we rushed through all the medical processes to understand what fight lies ahead.

Mum has had surgery and received the news that the cancer has not spread, but she will require targeted radiotherapy as a precaution. The cancer tumour was quite large in size so the medical team are considering whether chemotherapy is required. For now, Mum is home with all of us and on a healing journey as we await directions on the next steps.

As a family and wider community we have been sitting in deep reflection around how we use the precious time we have with one another to be present, do good work and strengthen our community for when we inevitably do pass on.

We have been held and loved by our inner circle and community - for that we thank you beyond the restrictions of words.

We recognise the immense privilege we have to access medical professionals and health services in this Country - and that for many others in the world this is not an option offered to them.

In our reflecting we wanted to share my Mum’s story, encourage you to “Check your susu’s”, even if it may seem scary. This cancer could not be felt externally — it was only picked up through a mammogram.

We also wish to encourage folks to continue advocating for equity and access across communities and oceans.

We all should hold the privilege to access medical professionals and health care - until such a time exists where we all do, our advocacy continues. For the moment that advocacy for our family is quiet as we hold each other; so we ask you to please be louder for us and everyone else 🤎

Last year I was reflecting on the different paths my work and creative passion has taken me. I was finding myself on the edge of burnout and as I often do when we are ready to mark a transition I connected with my Matriarchs to ask their permission to mark my hands.

A way for me to acknowledge the work I have done and also a reminder that moving forward all work these hands touch should be done with intention, warmth, mercy and love - not only for the work itself but a reminder to care for my body ✨

And in saying that… for the last two weeks I’ve sat in “Creative Incubation” for the work - The Matriarch’s Banquet - with an incredible Creative Team 🌺 While we’re not at a point to publicly share what we’ve been working on, I can say we have an exciting pathway being forged for us by those seen and unseen.

All my love and warmth to those involved in this process from the community stories, the creative team, the Matriarch advisors and the family that care for my spirit and body as we do the work 🥹🖤
